7 Days in Varna in Summer: Do You Need a Car for the Whole Week?

A summer itinerary combining Varna’s beaches and city sights with three days exploring the northern Black Sea coast - and a practical way to compare your transport costs.

By Konstantin Dolgushin · Planning information checked 31 October 2026 · Example travel dates: 19-26 July 2027

The short answer

For two adults staying in central Varna, a car can be convenient for a few days without being useful every day. You could spend the beginning of your holiday walking between the city, Sea Garden and beach, collect a rental for three consecutive excursion days, then return it before your final day in town. A full-week rental may still be worth it if parking is included, the weekly quote is close to the shorter quote, or you expect to drive most days.

The decision depends on your accommodation and itinerary as much as the rental price. Here is how that choice could work for a summer week in Varna.

The holiday behind this comparison

Our example is for two adults sharing one room and one car, staying in central Varna within comfortable walking distance of the pedestrian centre, Sea Garden and city beach. It is designed for summer sightseeing and beach time, rather than a winter visit or a holiday based at a resort outside the city.

We use 19-26 July 2027: seven nights, with departure the following Monday. The itinerary covers arrival day and the next six days, followed by the airport journey on departure morning. A seven-day rental means seven 24-hour periods; the three-day alternative also means three full 24-hour periods.

Both options visit the same places and return to the same accommodation each evening. Neither assumes you need a car simply because you have rented one.

Your week at a glance

PlanHow useful is a car?
Monday 19 July: Arrive, settle in and walk by the seaA transfer can replace the rental
Tuesday 20 July: Central Varna, Archaeological Museum and Roman BathsUsually little benefit for this central itinerary
Wednesday 21 July: Sea Garden and city beachUsually little benefit
Thursday 22 July: Collect the car; Balchik’s garden, palace complex and waterfrontGood for a flexible day trip
Friday 23 July: Cape Kaliakra, with time for a coastal stopThe strongest reason to rent in this itinerary
Saturday 24 July: Aladzha Monastery and Golden SandsConvenient, with public-transport alternatives
Sunday 25 July: Return the car, a relaxed final day in VarnaLittle benefit once the excursions are finished
Monday 26 July: Travel to Varna Airport and departureTransfer, bus or your full-week rental

The dates are a planning example, not a confirmed schedule of events or opening hours. Check summer 2027 attraction hours and transport services before booking.

Days 1-3: enjoy Varna before collecting a car

Day 1: arrive and keep the evening simple

Transfer to your accommodation, unpack and take a short walk towards the waterfront. Leave the ambitious sightseeing for tomorrow: a delayed flight should not undo your first day’s plans.

You have alternatives to collecting a car at the airport. Varna’s official tourism website identifies bus 409 as a connection between the airport, central Varna and coastal resorts. Check its current timetable against your flight and the walk from the stop to your accommodation.

For a taxi, the airport’s official taxi page lists Triumf Taxi at the Terminal 2 rank. When checked on 31 October 2026, it showed an estimated €11 fare from the airport to central Varna, with the actual fare determined by the meter. This is a current reference point, not a guaranteed July 2027 price or a quote for the return direction.

Car decision: if you are staying centrally and doing little more than checking in and going out for dinner, airport collection mainly buys convenience today.

Day 2: the city, its museum and the Roman Baths

Spend the day exploring central Varna. Start around the cathedral and pedestrian streets, make time for the Archaeological Museum, then continue towards the older streets near the Roman Baths. Choose a shorter version if you would rather spend the afternoon by the sea.

The municipality’s museum guide is a great starting point for choosing your visits; its Roman Baths page provides visitor information. Recheck opening days before fixing the order.

For this plan, walking connects the sightseeing rather than interrupting it. You can pause for coffee or change direction without returning to a parked car. If the distances or heat are uncomfortable, allow for a bus or taxi instead.

Car decision: central sightseeing alone is a weak reason to pay for another rental day and parking.

Day 3: Sea Garden and a beach day

Leave a day without a driving target. Walk through the Sea Garden, spend time at a city beach and choose somewhere nearby for lunch. The point of staying in Varna is partly being able to enjoy the city itself.

This works best when your accommodation really is within a manageable walk. A hotel described as “Varna” may be much farther along the coast, so check the address rather than relying on the destination name.

Car decision: for this central beach day, a rental could spend most of its time parked.

Days 4-6: group your excursions into one rental

Day 4: Balchik without rushing to the next stop

Collect your car from a convenient Varna city location and head to Balchik. Give the botanical garden and palace complex time, then have lunch and walk along the waterfront before returning to Varna.

Varna’s tourism information places the Balchik complex approximately 38 km from Varna. Your actual route depends on where you collect the car and park.

One detail is worth budgeting for: the University Botanical Garden’s visitor page says entry to the complex requires tickets for both the garden and the palace institution. Check both admission charges, rather than assuming one ticket covers everything. The same page listed car parking at €5 per calendar day when checked; confirm the current price and availability before visiting.

You can combine Balchik with Kaliakra, but this itinerary separates them to allow a slower holiday pace. It is a choice, not a requirement to spend two days travelling north.

Car decision: useful for choosing your own departure time and stops. An intercity bus or organised excursion is also worth checking if Balchik is your only trip outside Varna.

Day 5: Cape Kaliakra and the northern coast

Make Cape Kaliakra your main destination today. Varna’s official tourism guide places the cape approximately 80 km north of the city. Allow a substantial part of the day for the journey, the visit and a relaxed lunch.

If you have time and energy, add a coastal stop around Kavarna or Bolata after checking road access and parking. Keep it optional: you do not need to turn a coastal outing into a checklist of every viewpoint.

Bring water and sun protection, use marked visitor areas and leave enough time to return comfortably. The cape is a sightseeing stop; choose a separate suitable beach if you want to swim.

Car decision: this is where independent transport adds the most value to our plan. If you prefer not to drive, compare an organised excursion or a prearranged driver with a clear return arrangement.

Day 6: Aladzha Monastery and Golden Sands

For the final excursion day, combine Aladzha Monastery with time at Golden Sands, returning to Varna that evening. This keeps the day on the same side of the city without another long journey north.

The official Aladzha Monastery page describes both driving and public-transport access. Some bus options involve a walk from the stop, so check the route and return service rather than assuming a bus leaves you at the entrance.

Car decision: convenient, but not essential. If Golden Sands is the main attraction and you are happy using local transport, you may prefer a two-day rental covering Balchik and Kaliakra instead. Get a separate two-day quote before deciding.

Day 7: return the car and finish locally

Return the short rental at the agreed time on Sunday morning, then enjoy a final beach visit, lunch or walk in Varna. Arrange your airport journey for Monday.

For example, collection at 10:00 on 22 July and return at 10:00 on 25 July gives three 24-hour rental periods. Make sure the selected office accepts Sunday returns and that the return process fits your plans. Later collection or return arrangements can change the price.

The full-week alternative would run from 10:00 on 19 July to 10:00 on 26 July. Those times are comparison assumptions: use your actual flight times and allow for airport procedures when booking.

What would each option cost?

The following is an illustrative transport budget, not a live Get My Rides offer or a prediction of July 2027 prices. It shows how to compare two complete options. Replace the rental amounts with verified quotes for your dates, pickup locations, driver and chosen cover.

The rental allowances below assume the total already includes taxes and every unavoidable supplier, location and service charge for that booking. A refundable deposit is separate. Optional extra protection is not added; if you choose it, use comparable coverage in both quotes.

Worked example: two adults, one shared car

Transport cost for the whole holidaySeven-day airport rentalThree-day city rental + other transport
Rental including all mandatory charges - illustrative allowance€245€135
Fuel - modelled allowance€36€32
Accommodation parking - assumed €10 per night€70 for seven nights€30 for three nights
Parking during excursions - allowance€15€15
Airport journeys - assumed €15 each wayIncluded in the driving plan above€30
Travel to collect and return the short rental - allowance€0€16
Other local buses or taxis - allowance for both adults together€0€12
Illustrative total for two adults€366€270

In this example, the shorter rental saves €96 for the couple. That saving comes from the chosen assumptions; it is not a saving we have verified for the sample travel dates.

Fuel is modelled at 6 litres per 100 km and €1.60 per litre, using assumed totals of about 370 km for the full-week plan and 330 km for the shorter plan, rounded up to the displayed budgets. These are planning inputs, not measured route distances or current fuel-price claims. The longer plan includes additional airport and local driving.

The airport allowance is deliberately separate from the airport’s currently published one-way estimate. It is not a confirmed taxi fare in either direction. The €16 collection allowance and €12 local-transport allowance are also hypothetical; reduce them if you can walk, or increase them for your actual journeys.

Accommodation, meals and attraction admission are excluded because the itinerary is the same in both options. This is a transport comparison, not the complete cost of the holiday.

What if your accommodation includes free parking?

Remove €70 from the full-week budget and €30 from the short-rental budget. The example then becomes €296 versus €240, reducing the short rental’s advantage to €56.

That changes the decision. You might reasonably pay €56 more for the convenience of keeping a car throughout, especially with luggage, limited mobility or plans that could change each morning.

If you need paid parking, confirm a suitable space with your accommodation. Varna’s Blue Zone guidance describes payment methods and limits for hourly parking. A street-parking payment is not a reserved hotel space, and an hourly rate should not simply be multiplied into an assumed weekly parking arrangement.

Staying in Varna for two weeks?

A longer holiday doesn’t necessarily mean you need more rental days. If the extra week is mainly for the beach and city life, you could still group your excursions into a short rental and use other transport for the rest. If you plan more coastal trips or stays outside Varna, compare a longer rental too. Get separate quotes for each option: longer rentals can have lower daily rates, while keeping a car throughout may add parking costs.

The break-even question

Ask: does the rental saving exceed the extra cost of travelling without the car?

Under the main example’s assumptions, the short plan has €14 more in non-rental transport costs after accounting for its lower fuel and parking budgets. It therefore wins on cost whenever the seven-day rental quote exceeds the three-day quote by more than €14.

With free accommodation parking, that threshold rises to €54. Recalculate it using your own costs; a full-week rate can be competitive even when you only expect three excursion days.

When to keep the car for the whole week

A full-week rental becomes more attractive if your accommodation is outside walkable central Varna, parking is included, you plan frequent beach-hopping, or your group values avoiding extra transfers. It may also suit a family carrying child seats and beach equipment, although those items need to be included consistently in the comparison.

This central-Varna example should not be applied unchanged to Golden Sands, Sts. Constantine and Helena or a more remote coastal property. Check the actual journeys from your accommodation first.

When a shorter rental makes more sense

Start by comparing a short rental if you are staying centrally, want several days on foot and can group your excursions together. Check that the city pickup location is convenient and that the supplier permits the return time you need.

Three days is a relaxed option for our itinerary. Two could work if you use other transport for Golden Sands, or combine Balchik and Kaliakra into a longer day. If your holiday is almost entirely about Varna’s city beach, restaurants and museums, compare a trip without a rental as well.

Plan your week, then compare your dates

For this itinerary, a three-day rental is a good starting point - not an automatic winner. Get separate quotes for the whole week and your excursion days, add the transfers and parking, and decide whether any remaining price difference is worth the convenience.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car every day in Varna in summer?

Not for the central stay described here. Several days focus on walking, sightseeing and a nearby beach. A car becomes more useful when you head beyond the city or stay somewhere with fewer convenient transport options.

Is three days enough for the surrounding sights?

Three days allows separate outings to Balchik, Kaliakra, and Aladzha Monastery with Golden Sands. It is a suggested pace, not a requirement. Choose fewer stops if you would prefer more beach time.

Is renting for three days always cheaper than renting for seven?

No. Rental rates can change with duration, and a short rental may require transfers that a full-week rental avoids. Compare total costs using separate quotes rather than multiplying one daily rate.

Does this itinerary work in winter?

Some sights can still be visited, but the beach-focused schedule, daylight and transport assumptions are for summer. Check seasonal opening hours and build a different itinerary for a winter trip.
